July 12, 2018: Cancer New Moon Solar Eclipse

This month’s New Moon is also a Solar Eclipse. Even if we can’t see an Eclipse in the sky where we live, these celestial events are renowned for being very powerful in the way in which they can impact our lives.

Oftentimes, life-changing events or reflections occur around the time of an Eclipse. Yet, remember that reflective of the word itself, things are often “eclipsed” around the time of Eclipses. As such, you may find yourself feeling like there is a sea change in your life, that seeds are being planted, yet not clear what it will be that will bear fruit. And as something new is about to take root, it often requires that something need to be cleared for this to happen. Therefore, you may experience that just as it feels that the new is emerging, other things are ending and some chapters are closing.

While clarity as to what is being inspired by these shifts--and how it’s encouraging the unfolding of your life--may seem obscured and eclipsed in the moment, it should become more evidenced after weeks and months pass. And so, if you’re not yet clear what it is that is being given form, that may be just as it should be.

A Solar Eclipse signifies a time for beginnings. When this celestial event occurs in Cancer, what is usually ushered in is related to getting more understanding as to what contributes to our sense of roots and grounded nurturance. As Cancer connects us to those whom we call our tribe, or wish to call our tribe, the theme of family and ancestry may be quite pronounced.

Therefore, the Cancer New Moon can provide us with an opportunity to begin a new cycle in relationship to our family. Who is our family and what is our place in the lineage? Where has our family informed who we are? Which facets do we want to carry forward and which do we want to personally release? Are there people we have adopted into our lives who feel more like family than those to whom we are blood related; and if so, what it is about them that fuels a sense of connectivity? These are some reflections that may feel especially significant during this time.

This Solar Eclipse is opposing Pluto, further heightening its potential for change and transformation as well as the need to let something go so that renewal can occur. Consider what is standing in your way of feeling more at home—in your life, your relationship, your body, your career. Then see whether something needs to be surrendered—whether the way you orient, a belief that you have, a habitual response that you maintain, or the like—so that a new stage, one that is more nourishing for you and nurtures you emotionally—can prevail.

This Cancer Solar Eclipse also occurs the week that expansive Jupiter shifts direct, fueling a greater sense of possibility and growth. For more on how Jupiter's dynamic may play a role in this week, see my weekly astrology insights

This month’s New Moon falls at 21 degrees of Cancer (Sun and Moon). While everyone experiences the energies of the New Moon, if you have planets or pivotal points (i.e., Ascendant/Descendant or Nadir/Midheaven) around this degree in Cancer or the other cardinal signs—Aries, Libra, Capricorn—it may impact you more intensely. Relatedly, while there are collective themes ushered in by a Solar Eclipse, what new beginnings may be emerging for you personally can be better understand by seeing where this Solar Eclipse falls in your chart.

Cancer New Moon Apothecary Suggestions

Cancer rules the stomach, sinuses, body fluids, and breasts. Pay extra attention to these parts of the body around the time of this New Moon.

Mariposa Lily flower essence: Cancer is the sign of the mother and the maternal nature that exists within all of us. Yet, some people feel disconnected from a sense of maternal nurturance. It may be that they perceived their mother didn’t meet their needs, an imprint that then shapes their connection to expressing warmth and radiance as well as nourishing themselves and others. If issues related to your mother and the caring feminine energy within you are arising during this time, consider Mariposa Lily flower essence. It helps to inspire maternal consciousness and a sense of warmth and caring, enlivening a reconnection to mother and the mother archetype. (Flower essences are made from flower-infused water and work energetically to restore emotional and mental balance. You can find them in natural food stores or holistic pharmacies.)

Jasmine essential oil: As the jasmine flower is governed by the Moon—the planetary ruler of Cancer—enjoying its aroma can help support the energetics of this New Moon. Jasmine has a rapturous fragrance that arouses our ability to connect to the feminine spirit within us. It’s a lauded aphrodisiac as well. Use it as perfume, combine it with body oil for a sensuality-inspiring massage, or sprinkle a few drops in a bath and soak in its feminine revelry.
