September 9, 2018: Virgo New Moon

The Virgo New Moon inspires us to initiate new pathways in our lives so that we can craft systems that allow us to live from a place of greater refinement and organization. As Virgo is dedicated to helping and healing, we may also find that what is being initiated is a deeper level of understanding as to how we can be of service to others.

During this time, there may also be a focus on arts and crafts. If you are working on a creative project, you may find the additional attention to detail you need in order to further refine your creation. If you’ve considered venturing into a new hobby—knitting, cooking, jewelry making, or something else that’s caught your fancy—this time may provide you with just the strategy and motivation you need to embark upon your new artful enterprise. And given that Virgo is a sign intimately connected to food, diet, and health, we may get extra inspired to focus on our self-care regimen.

Be attentive and clear as you calculate your aims. Yet, also be careful about a tendency towards hyper-criticality. When Virgo energy is strong, we have a tendency to hold things to very high standards. While this can be an asset, we just have to be careful that it doesn’t sway into the realm of hyper-judgment that is not only unproductive but also unhealthy. Remember that while the act of perfecting may be laudable, perfection itself doesn’t exist and so we shouldn’t compare ourselves and/or others to that illusive goal.

This year, this pull towards the perfect and ideal may be even more strong, and haze-inspiring, given that this New Moon opposes Neptune and sextiles Jupiter. We could find ourselves wanting to be precise and yet also feeling pulled to expand into waves of sensitivity.

Seeing how form and formlessness may inform each other is another theme of this New Moon as we can see what emerges when we allow the rational to seed the imaginative and the imaginative to impregnate the rational. The dance with the Sun and Moon in Virgo meeting Neptune in Pisces seems to be one of separating and re/uniting, finding that alchemical balance between the coming together as one and the dispersing into the discernable parts.

We could find ourselves a bit dreamy during the days around this New Moon. This may enhance our connection with our dreamscape and allow us to gain great insights from our intuition (if we listen to it, and trust it). Yet, it may also inspire a sense of spacey-ness; so, focus on focusing, doing grounding exercises if you feel a bit mentally scattered.

The New Moon also connects with Pluto in Capricorn. And with this, what we experience may seem to embody a greater level of depth and gravity.

This month’s New Moon falls at 17 degrees of Virgo (Sun and Moon). While everyone experiences the energies of the New Moon, if you have planets or pivotal points (i.e., Ascendant/Descendant or Nadir/Midheaven) around this degree in Virgo or the other mutable signs—Gemini, Sagittarius, Pisces—it may impact you more intensely.

Virgo New Moon Apothecary Suggestions

Virgo rules the small intestines and digestive system. Pay extra attention to these parts of the body around the time of this New Moon.

Beech flower essence: When Virgo energy is strong so may also be a sense of criticality. We strive for perfection, holding ourselves to task for the smallest of things. Judgment of others may also be heightened as we could find ourselves captivated in a sense of intolerance of what we perceive to be others’ shortcomings (perhaps even projecting out our frustrations with ourselves onto others). If you are looking for an elixir to help inspire within you more warmth and acceptance, expanding the space of tolerance and an ability to see the good within yourself/others and a variety of situations, consider Beech flower essence. Beech also connects with heightened Virgo energy another way, as it’s a remedy that is considered to inspire better digestion—physically and emotionally. (Flower essences are made from flower-infused water and work energetically to restore emotional and mental balance. You can find them in natural food stores or holistic pharmacies.)

Melissa (lemon balm): Melissa essential oil is a fragrant way to relax and dispel anxiety. Use some in a bath or unscented body lotion. Make a melissa-scented calming room spray by adding a few drops to a mister bottle filled with water. Melissa also has mind-focusing qualities, which can be very helpful during this time. Its calming may also relieve the stress and tension that could otherwise show up and be felt in the Virgo-ruled digestive system. Check the labels carefully and buy a high-quality product as less expensive melissa oils are sometimes adulterated with citronella or lemongrass.
