Cancer New Moon Solar Eclipse

On June 21, we have a New Moon that is also a Solar Eclipse. Remember that even if we can’t see an Eclipse in the sky where we live, these celestial events are renowned for being very powerful in the ways in which they can impact our lives. Oftentimes, life-changing events or reflections occur around the time of an Eclipse. Yet, also remember that reflective of the word itself, things are often “eclipsed” around the time of Eclipses. As such, you may find yourself feeling like there is a sea change in your life, that seeds are being planted, yet not fully clear what it will be that will bear fruit. That clarity becomes greater as time passes; and so if you’re not yet clear what it is that is being given form, that may be just as it should be.

Cancer is associated with that which gives us roots and grounded nurturance. It relates to those whom we call our tribe, or wish to call our tribe. It connects us to ancestry, the home, and the past.

The subject of home may play a central role in our thinking during this time, as it has over the last several months owing to stay-at-home orders due to COVID-19. Many people have discovered a new relationship with home, having it be the place where we spend the bulk of our time, while doing so in different ways than before: it’s the place in which we not only reside, but now may also work, and also school our children. The array of the functions it serves has greatly expanded and perhaps even tested its capacity, as this shift has redefined how we use and interact in our abode.

Yet, home has also become a centerpiece for other societal rallies. Some argue against being told to stay at home, while for others, they don’t have the luxury—owing to the jobs they do and socioeconomic factors—to stay at home. The notion of home—and whether they may even continue to have one as they do—is on some people’s minds owing to the grave economic fallout that many people are experiencing. Additionally, as people rally against injustices that have pervaded through society for centuries, if not longer, the relationship many have with the perception of their homeland is shifting.

Suffice it to say, this Solar Eclipse seems centered around this theme, ushering in an individual and collective shift when it comes to what it is that has us feel at home. It seems as if we’re on the verge of a new relationship to this, perhaps on many fronts. And to make space for this new orientations, old paradigms may drift away. (Remember that while a Solar Eclipse portends a new beginning that it also correlates with a time of endings so that a fresh chapter can emerge.)

Focus in on your personal relationship with home—as well as what’s arising related to this in the collective—in any way that this theme strikes you. Feel into what may appear to be outworn and what new approaches to home you may want to invite in.

Remember too that when thinking of home, invariably we’re also thinking about the sense of feeling at home, regardless of where you are. It’s that sense of feeling safe and secure, regardless of where you reside, and feeling at home in your own skin. This too, and the ability to return to the home within, seems to be a focus of this time. See what it is that can help you more fully forge your relationship with your deepest self and a solid trust of your feelings to help you navigate through your life. (For more explorations on the subject of home, listen in to the most recent episode of So Divine! Conversations in which Megan Skinner and I explore this very topic.)

Given that this Eclipse occurs on the Solstice, it connects with what’s known as the Cardinal Axis (in this case the first degree of Cancer, which also includes the first degrees of Aries, Libra, and Capricorn, the other cardinal zodiacal signs). As such, our focused attention may be more focused than usual on collective issues, as we’re reminded that the personal is political, that we are all woven in to the web of humanity and the earth’s unfolding.

This month’s New Moon falls at 1 degrees of Cancer (Sun and Moon). While everyone experiences the energies of the New Moon, if you have planets or pivotal points (i.e., Ascendant/Descendant or Nadir/Midheaven) around this degree in Cancer or the other cardinal signs of Aries, Libra, or Capricorn (or the very last degree of the mutable signs of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, or Pisces), it may impact you more intensely.

Cancer New Moon Solar Eclipse Apothecary Suggestions

Cancer rules the stomach, sinuses, body fluids, and breasts. Pay extra attention to these parts of the body around the time of this New Moon Solar Eclipse.

Mariposa Lily flower essence: Cancer is the sign of the mother and the maternal nature that exists within all of us. Yet, some people feel disconnected from a sense of maternal nurturance. It may be that they perceived their mother didn’t meet their needs, an imprint that then shapes their connection to expressing warmth and radiance as well as nourishing themselves and others. If issues related to your mother and the caring feminine energy within you are arising during this time, consider Mariposa Lily flower essence. It helps to inspire maternal consciousness and a sense of warmth and caring, enlivening a reconnection to mother and the mother archetype. (Flower essences are made from flower-infused water and work energetically to restore emotional and mental balance. You can find them in natural food stores or holistic pharmacies.)

Jasmine essential oil: As the jasmine flower is governed by the Moon—the planetary ruler of Cancer—enjoying its aroma can help support the energetics of this New Moon. Jasmine has a rapturous fragrance that arouses our ability to connect to the feminine spirit within us. It’s a lauded aphrodisiac as well. Use it as perfume, combine it with body oil for a sensuality-inspiring massage, or sprinkle a few drops in a bath and soak in its feminine revelry.

The New Moon Solar Eclipse occurs on June 21 at 2:41 am Eastern Daylight Time (- 7 hours GMT)
